On Halloween, going trick or treating is an exciting tradition that most kids enjoy. Children love the costumes, the excitement from going door to door, but most of all… the candy!
From hard candies and caramels to delicious chocolate bars and complex flavors of gummies, candy is the go to treat on Halloween. Over the past few years, candy has evolved and come a long way from the classics older generations enjoyed. Freshman Tenley Thorell says, “Personally, I prefer newer candies because of all the different types of flavors they offer.”
In 2020, trick or treating was quite difficult because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but kids still found a way to spend their Halloween eating candy. According to USA Today, Snickers were the most consumed candy in 2020. Snickers took the lead in sales because of their unique marketing. Trick or treaters would get the mini sized Snicker candy bars and see if they could spell the word “Snicker” with the bars, a clever marketing tactic to boost sales.
In 2021, Skittles rose to the top of all candy charts. Customers liked their funny commercials and their classic slogan, “Taste the rainbow.” Also, they had just recently released their new product of Skittles Gummies, which piqued buyers’ interests and made them more likely to purchase Skittles products.
Skittles came close to being the most popular candy of 2022, but Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups was the top choice for that year. Sophomore Ellie Bellew agrees with this statement, saying “My favorite candy is Reese’s!” Consumers loved the classic blend of peanut butter and chocolate, so it makes sense that Reese’s took the prize for Best Halloween Candy of 2022.
Once gain, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups was the most popular candy of 2023. It is a true classic and it is widely available, so naturally lots of people bought it. Also, their pumpkin shaped candies were a fun way to switch the design of the product, while still keeping the original flavors.
Yet again, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups won for the most purchased candy in the 2024 Halloween season. Evidently, many people in America admire the reliability of the consistent flavors in Reeses’ brand.
So far, in 2025 the most popular candy is—yep, you guessed it—Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! Clearly there are many fans of this Halloween treat, with it dominating in sales nationwide during the fall season. Although Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the most popular candy, M&Ms and KitKats follow closely behind them in sales.
Even though Halloween hasn’t happened yet, it’s fair to say that children’s Halloween buckets and pillow cases will definitely be filled with a lot of chocolate this year!
