Boston Scientific, the Massachusetts based medical company known for developing renowned complex health procedures, has recently opened a new facility in Maple Grove, Minnesota. For the past 40 years, the company has been a global leader in medical technologies, creating drugs across the fields of endoscopy, oncology, cardiology, and many others. They distribute their products to hospitals, clinics and medical offices worldwide.
While their headquarters are still located in Marlborough, Massachusetts, this purchase continues to mark the company’s wide expansion within the state of Minnesota, as they already own a major facility called the Weaver Lake Campus. This new facility continues to make use of the company’s 12 billion dollars invested into business operations within Minnesota.
The building itself cost 12 million dollars to buy and it will mainly focus on housing the company’s cardiovascular department and research laboratories. Executive Vice President Joe Fitzgerald believes that this new facility is an opportunity for new technologies and jobs to emerge within the company.
The office building is located along Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove and stands at an impressive 400,000 square feet. Part of the facility is made up of 14,000 yards of concrete that weigh in at 57 million pounds. The building will also come with numerous sustainability elements, like solar panels, geothermal climate control, and chargers for electric vehicles, helping to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
The research and development capabilities that come with this new facility are reported to be extremely innovative, while also allowing for the company to create a greater manufacturing footprint. New jobs are also expected to emerge for residents as well as partnerships with local businesses around Maple Grove.
In Minnesota, Boston Scientific currently employs 10,000 people, but that number is expected to grow to 12,000 thanks to this new facility. They also plan on expanding their other divisions, like their Weaver Lake Road campus.
Students at HHS are optimistic about what the new facility means for Boston Scientific. Freshman Nik Romania says, “I think it will help with medical procedures because cardiology is really important, and I have a relative who suffers from heart conditions so I’m excited for this new opportunity.”
Sophomore Gabe Solano thinks this new facility will be “revolutionary, as it will provide many job opportunities for young scientists.”
Overall, this new facility will be able to heighten the impressive medical work that Boston Scientific already excels at, as well as create new jobs for residents in Minnesota.
