This year, the Hingham High School field hockey team made it the farthest they ever have in the tournament. Over the years, the girls have made it to the Final Four multiple times, but this is the first year they have ever made it to the championships. They first started off by playing Minnechaug in the round of 32, then Milton in the Sweet Sixteen, Reading in the Elite Eight, Canton in the Final Four, and finally, Somerset Berkley in the State Championship for D2 field hockey.
Last Saturday, at Burlington High School, the girls took on Somerset Berkley. This game did not end with Hingham winning, although the girls tried extremely hard. Somerset Berkley won by three and Hingham did not score. This was a very competitive game with neither teams getting it in the net in the whole first half. Although the girls did not come out with the result they wanted, they were still extremely proud they made it the farthest in program history.
Hingham’s field hockey team has so many talented players, but some of their best players are their thirteen seniors. These include captain Emily Kiernan, captain Sam Ruddick, captain Ella O’Neill, captain Ryan Hallisey, captain Kaitlyn Manning, Katie Whitlock, Sammy Price, Libby Rogers, Caitlin Patten, Ariana Sood, Olivia Nolan, Madeline Accettella, and Izzy McGarr. These girls have been with the team for four years and it heartbreaking for many that this was their final year playing for Hingham.
Emily Kiernan said, “I have loved playing field hockey for all four of my years here and I am so sad it is over, but I am so proud of everyone and happy we had such a good season.”
Although there are so many seniors on this team, there are also many other key players including three juniors; Kaylie Fabrizio, Libby Koyce, and goalie Molly McDonald. Along with this, there are seven sophomores; Maggie O’Neill, Sam McCabe, Clare LaRonde, Libby Baxter and goalie Lina Struzziery.
Sophomore Maggie O’Neill said, “I am so sad to not play with my sister anymore, but I am so happy with how great our season was.” All of these girls had such a big role on the team this year and battled until the very end.
