The new Wicked movie has captivated audiences, mesmerized viewers with the complex scenery, and brought a new light to the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West. Making 226 million dollars worldwide on opening weekend, it is safe to say that Wicked: For Good is already a massive success. Many people were thrilled for its arrival, including Sadie Jarvis who commented, “I’m so excited for the new movie! I can’t wait to see what happens!”
Wicked: For Good, directed by Jon M. Chu, is a continuation of Wicked: Part One, which was released on November 22, 2024. Originally a book called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West written by Gregory Maguire and based on The Wizard of Oz, it was first introduced into the musical theater world in 2003 with its first appearance on Broadway.
The story follows Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West (Cynthia Erivo), and Glinda, the Good Witch (Ariana Grande), as Elphaba tries to free the animals of Oz and expose the “Wonderful” Wizard while Glinda navigates her new life as the Good Witch. In this movie, plot points are wrapped up from the first movie and connections are made to the events in the Wizard of Oz. For example, Fiyero, the prince of Tigelaar introduced in the first movie, transforms into the Scarecrow because of a spell that Elphaba cast on him in an attempt to save his life.
Many new songs were introduced in this movie, including the passionate ballad “No Good Deed” and the emotional duet “For Good,” which was sung by Elphaba and Glinda while they were expressing how they have changed each other.
Overall, many enjoyed this movie and it left an emotional resonance with them. One fan, Bella Hoffman, talked about her favorite scene. She says, “I really loved the scene where Elphaba fakes her death so she can pretend that Glinda wasn’t her friend. It truly showed their true friendship because they would do anything for each other.” Like Bella, almost everyone that has watched Wicked: For Good has left a positive review and said that it was a great way to continue the franchise.
