During Christmas time, it is popular across the United States for people of all ages to bake sweets not only for Santa but also for themselves! There’s nothing quite like sitting by a crackling fire and enjoying delicious desserts that one has put effort into making. Using seasonal flavors like peppermint and ginger, here are some of the top treats to enjoy this holiday season.
Gingerbread + Sugar Cookies
Both timeless holiday favorites, these two types of cookies are always a hit, no matter the age. Buying cookie cutters to cut out the dough in all shapes and fun sizes, making the dough with loved ones, and then decorating the cookies with icing and sprinkles of all colors will be sure to make a fun afternoon. Anna Rubel, a sophomore at Hingham High School, described, “I love making sugar cookies with my mom around the holidays, and it is always a favorite in my house!”
Peppermint Bark
Peppermint bark encompasses all the flavors in one dessert. As one of the easiest desserts to make, this treat is sweet and savory due to the mix of both the chocolate and the peppermint. It requires only 2 ingredients-chocolate and peppermint- and a little bit of time, but there are definitely plenty of ways to make it fancier!
Chocolate Pretzel Bites
Chocolate pretzel bites, made with pretzels, a Hershey kiss or Rolos, and then topped with an M&M, are a cheap, delicious dessert to make during the Christmas time. Even though there are a ton of names for them, and many versions too, it is super yummy to make. Anna Galvin, a sophomore at Hingham High School, said, “I love making these with my siblings around Christmas time, and there are so many fun versions to make of them!”
Yule Log
A yule log, made with cake and icing, then rolled and topped with all sorts of sweet treats, is way more involved to make, but it is still delicious! It is possible to add all types of flavors inside; the cake itself could be standard chocolate or vanilla, or it can be fun to be adventurous and extend to flavors like peppermint, pumpkin, or even lemon!
Other Types of Cookies
Lastly, but certainly not least, there are tens of different types of cookies to make not only year-round, but especially for Christmas. Snickerdoodles, lemon meringue, molasses, oatmeal, peanut butter, biscotti, and macarons are all popular choices of what you can make this holiday season.
