As the holidays roll around, there is an abundance of activities guaranteed to bring joy and raise the seasonal spirit. From bundling up to explore markets in Boston to simply trying festive desserts, there are plenty of options for all ages to enjoy.
To start, if you’re looking to shop for yourself or loved ones, Snowport is a must-visit. Located in the Seaport District of Boston, Snowport first opened in 2021 and has since become a loved seasonal tradition. Each year, from November 7 to December 28, the Seaport transforms into a winter-themed market with over 125 merchants. These small businesses offer something for everyone: food, clothes, goods, crafts, and more. A few standout vendors include The Frenchman’s Goods, serving warm, delicious French crepes; Cheese Wheel Pastas, known for their Parmesan wheel-spun pasta; Element Oasis, which sells unique homemade body and skincare products; and Starboard and Co., offering beautiful New England-inspired linens. These are just a few of the many businesses to support at Snowport while soaking in the festive atmosphere and getting your holiday shopping done efficiently.
Another seasonal activity you can only enjoy in winter is outdoor ice skating. Although the temperatures have been freezing, that also means the ponds are freezing. The Boston Common Frog Pond is a popular spot to ice skate because it offers public skating and ice-skating lessons. This activity is perfect for anyone looking to embrace winter while staying active. The rink welcomes both beginners and experts, making it a pastime truly open to everyone.
If skating and shopping in Boston feel too far away, there are plenty of local options as well. One cozy activity is to make peppermint brownies. All you need is a brownie mix (or your own recipe) and chocolate chips with peppermint bark mixed in. This dessert is delicious and satisfying because of the peppermint essence and rich chocolate combined. Trader Joe’s also offers many seasonal treats, with some becoming fan favorites. Junior Sadie Sheehan shared her favorite: “I really enjoy the Joe-Joes from Trader Joe’s. The peppermint cream filling with the combination of the chocolate wafer on top is the perfect holiday treat.” If chocolate and peppermint aren’t your go-to flavors, there are plenty of other festive options like dark chocolate stars and gingerbread sandwich cookies.
Beyond snacks, you can also add a seasonal twist to winter drinks, especially hot chocolate. Amanda Mildrum shared one particularly festive tradition: “My favorite activity is getting hot cocoa from Starbucks with my friends and cruising down Jerusalem Road in Cohasset while watching the beautifully decorated houses, listening to holiday tunes, and smelling the crisp ocean air.”
Finally, one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate the season is by giving back to the community. There are countless volunteer opportunities this time of year: helping at local food pantries, supporting gift drives so families can give each other presents, or visiting nursing homes and hospitals to bring cheer to patients. These acts of kindness help spread joy during the holiday season.
