The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants is the newest film in the SpongeBob film series, following over twenty-five years of episode success. Released on Christmas Day, 2025, the film has brought back nostalgic memories and adventure to viewers ranging from very young to more mature. This movie has been different in its ability to portray humor for all ages and an exciting plot.
The movie is centered around SpongeBob as he goes out on a mission to prove to everybody in Bikini Bottom that he is “big and brave.” The reappearance of the notorious Flying Dutchman from the episode series throws SpongeBob off guard, forcing him to travel through dangerous and unfamiliar areas–previously never explored in past movies. Not only do viewers get to watch the sponge take on the ocean, but classic characters such as Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy join in and add their own touches that enhance the excitement and plot of the movie.
The comedy in the movie has been a hot topic of discussion on social media, partly due to two reasons: adult humor versus a majority child audience. Many individuals deem the movie a bit inappropriate due to the jokes made. For example, a scene in the movie details SpongeBob warning to “Not drop the soap,” implying an assault in a prison shower facility. Additionally, advertising with SpongeBob not having pants on has led many parents to wonder if the movie is truly for kids. Senior Tommy Hartnett says, “The movie was great, I felt as though there were too many jokes that were not appropriate for the child audience, which I saw a lot of when screening the movie.”
However, besides comedy, the SpongeBob movie has ultimately been a TikTok success. With a song titled “Big Guy,” rapped by Ice Spice, a female rapper who gained popularity in 2022 following her “Munch” song. “Big Guy” is not inherently a good song that individuals write on TikTok, but has become memeified and turned into a TikTok dance trend where users use a part of the lyrics that reads, “SpongeBob. Big Guy. Pants. Okay.”
Junior Jesse Tennebo says, “I personally do not like the song or the trend, but the movie was good since it did go back to old episodes and try to expand on past plot and their older audience.” Many users on TikTok have agreed with this opinion.
Overall, the SpongeBob movie is worth watching, especially if you grew up watching the show, since it would make sense to you. To form a fair opinion, go to your local cinema and watch the movie, and enjoy years of childhood in one hour. Happy watching!
