This past Friday, January 30th, the Hingham Girls Basketball team won against Marshfield during their first-ever Maddie’s Promise fundraiser! The game kicked off with a special message about Maddie’s Promise and the goal of the non-profit organization, which is to push for rare childhood cancer research and find a cure. After an exciting introduction of the starting players, the Hingham and Marshfield teams began their battle. Throughout the entire game, the team fiercely played on the court, keeping the score close, and Hingham got the win 37 to 29!
The two teams climbed their way up the scoreboard together throughout the first three quarters, yet during the fourth quarter, Hingham jumped up with a lead of 6 points, and then sealed the win by 8 after two foul shots made by Anna Post. Dee Sweeney, a sophomore at Hingham High School, states that, “It was a really exciting game and I’m really proud of the team! This is a great cause I am happy to support. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the season plays out!”

Not only was the win important for the girls team as their regular season comes nears its end, but Maddie’s Promise additionally raised over $500 with the 50/50 raffle, and the team was decked out in purple socks, warm-up shirts, and purple ribbons in their hair! The winner of the raffle, Brigid Lowther, generously donated her winnings to Maddie’s Promise in an act of kindness and generosity. Casey Teahan, a sophomore at Hingham High and a player on the JV girls basketball team, believes that, “It was an amazing game to watch and a great cause to support. The energy from both the team and the crowd reflected the strength of the Hingham community.”
For the Maddie’s Promise Girls Basketball game, Hingham came together not only for the team but also in aid of the impactful organization that is Maddie’s Promise, demonstrating strength and the importance of community. Ellie Rogers, a dedicated supporter and viewer of both Hingham basketball teams, says, “It was an awesome game to watch and Hingham played amazingly! I’ve loved watching the team improve this year, and everyone plays so well together! I loved having the opportunity to support such a great cause for this game!”
Over the entirety of the season, the girls have not only grown with their basketball skills, but also with each other, creating an environment that encourages beyond just winning, one also for happiness and excitement to be playing together! Overall, the event was wildly successful, not only raising money for Maddie’s Promise but also ending with a win for the Hingham Girls Basketball team!
