The Hingham Boys basketball team celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday with an emotional matchup against Brockton, honoring its senior class before tipoff in front of a packed crowd.
Prior to the game, Hingham recognized its seniors with family members at center court, a moment that drew applause and set the tone for a night that was about more than the final result. The seniors who have helped shape the program through years of work in practices, summer leagues, and big game moments were greeted with cheers as they took the floor. Seniors include Gabe Tesler, Randy Chen, Cavan Nicholas, and Jake Varholak.
A special moment was held for one of the seniors, Alexander Rozanitis, who was recognized not for just his time with the program, but for his strength off the court. After battling cancer, he was congratulated by teammates, coaches, and fans, drawing a long ovation from the gym. His journey and perseverance served as a reminder that Senior Night was about more than just basketball.
Once the ball went up, the game quickly turned into a physical, fast-paced battle from both teams. Brockton brought size and intense pressure on defense, while Hingham answered with disciplined ball movement and energy on both ends of the court. Junior on the Hingham Basketball team, Matthew Stratton, says, “Brockton’s rapid ball movement and quickness on defense definitely gave them an advantage.”
Hingham and Brockton traded baskets throughout the first quarter, leaning on senior leadership to settle the game during key stretches. The seniors made their presence felt in all areas as they dove for loose balls, communicated heavily on defense, and provided steady offense. Senior at Hingham High School, Quinn Allen, says, “Younger players also stepped up, feeding off the Senior Night atmosphere, including Jack Carey, Peter Ford, Andy Gerlach, Will Cosman, and Matthew Stratton.”
Down the stretch, intensity ramped up as both teams competed on every possession. Brockton’s physicality and agility overpowered Hingham leading to a Brockton victory as the final buzzer sounded.
The night ended with hugs, photos, and a long ovation from the crowd, as teammates and coaches made sure the seniors soaked in one of their final home games.
