Super Bowl 60 was a game that nobody will forget, between two highly talented teams, the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. Although it wasn’t the most interesting Super Bowl, it was certainly one with many mistakes, particularly on the Patriots’ side.
The Patriots have been spectacular this season, ending with a 14-3 record, finishing 2nd in the AFC, and winning the AFC championship, moving on to the Super Bowl. This game was not pretty for the Patriots, losing 29-13. Most of the Patriots’ struggles were defined by a dominant Seattle pass rush that overwhelmed the Patriots’ offensive line and stifled patriots QB Drake Maye.
To start, the Patriots offensive line struggled, allowing 14 quarterback pressures throughout the game (a season high). Rookie tackle Will Campbell played a particularly rough game, letting up a sack and being almost entirely accountable for all of the quarterback pressures, including a big penalty to set the Patriots back 10 yards.
This was a shock to the whole country, as the Patriots had the number two scoring offense in the entire league, with Drake Maye, who was the runner-up for MVP, losing by 1 vote. Even though Maye was runner-up for MVP, he still could not perform under the Super Bowl pressure, throwing 2 interceptions and giving up 1 fumble. He managed to have 295 yards, all coming from late in the second half. Maye was also sacked 6 times, causing even more struggle for the young quarterback.
The Seattle Seahawks, who finished in first place for the entire league, secured this game from the start. The Seattle defense delivered a historically dominant performance, recording 6 sacks, 11 quarterback hits, 2 interceptions, and 1 pick-six, holding New England to just 51 total yards of offense and zero points entering the second half.
To add, the Seattle offense was just as good as their defense, with one player really standing out, Kenneth Walker III, who played very well. He earned MVP of the game, rushing for 135 yards on only 27 carries and also adding 26 receiving yards for a total of 161 scrimmage yards. Walker is the first running back in 28 years to win Super Bowl MVP.
I asked a few students for their thoughts on the game. Colin Enright, a junior at HHS, describes, “I think it was disappointing to watch the Patriots struggle so badly after how good their season has been.”
John Walsh, also a junior at HHS, explains, “I thought Christian Gonzalez fought his heart out, but Will Campbell needs to work at Amazon or get a 9-5.”
Overall, the Seahawks achieved their revenge on the Patriots after the miraculous goal-line interception in 2015 that left Seattle fans stunned.
