February break has ended and students have returned to their regular schedules back at Hingham High School. During the week off, some students traveled to warm destinations, others embraced colder climates, and many chose to relax at home. The vacation is the perfect way to make winter more manageable for students, especially in the midst of demanding school work and chilly weather.
Whether students were skiing, sitting at home, or lounging on a beach, all of the activities students participated in provided a refreshing break from the bustle of school work and sports. Although, for some students, sports continued even over the break.
Caroline Allen, a member of the Hingham High School Girls Varsity Hockey team remarks, “Staying home for break was eventful but also somewhat boring. The fun part was that I got to spend time with my team and hang out with them. The not so fun part was being home. With the snow, there was not much to do.”
For Adeline Kelley, a member of the HHS Ski Team, her season ended before the break, allowing her to travel and embark out of the cold. She details her travels, “This February break I went to Aruba and I had such a great time finally in the warmth. Although, when it came to the last day of my vacation flights were constantly being canceled. We had three flights booked with two of them getting cancelled. We ended up flying into Atlanta then to DC and taking a train to get home, all because of the weather!”
Other students had similar experiences to Adeline; They were stuck in their vacation spot because of the snowstorm in Massachusetts. Gabby Sacco, who vacationed in Florida, could not get a flight back to Boston until Friday. Instead of waiting, she drove 25 hours back home, despite the snow troubles.
Even with the snowstorm delaying the return of many students, others were lucky enough to make it home in time before any flights were cancelled. Allie Korn also went to Florida, but returned home on Saturday, luckily missing the air travel troubles. She describes her trip to Disney World as “very fun and eventful. I enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as being in the warm weather!”
Overall, students greatly enjoyed their extended winter break with the three unprecedented snow days. HHS students greatly cherish the week-long break that happens every February. Whether students stayed home in the snow or chased the sun elsewhere, February break offered a much-needed pause before the school year proceeds rapidly.
