With the feet of snow blanketing Hingham, individuals may feel trapped inside their homes. However, there are countless ways to enjoy the snow both indoors and outdoors. Below are ideas of activities to do during those days to make the best of this winter wonderland.
Beyond the beauty the snow brings to the eye, it can also be a fun opportunity to enjoy it for the short time it is here. To begin, there are the obvious activities like making a snowman, sledding down big hills, and ending up inside with a warm cup of hot chocolate. Although these are popular activities that don’t fail to bring excitement and joy, there is so much more to do when you may feel bored.
A more well-known but under appreciated activity to take part in is baking. Baking not only any type of cookie, but also boxed cake or brownies (if you’re looking for something easy), or something homemade, such as mug cakes, Hershey kiss pretzels bites, and cinnamon rolls. Baking is a great way to enjoy the indoors if you’re trapped inside from the snow, while still socializing with family/friends, or even alone to stay off phones.
Another sweet treat to make that brings the outdoors in is snow cream. Snow cream consists of 4 simple ingredients that many already own: milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. When you combine them all in a bowl with snow, you get a limited-edition, delicious treat. Furthermore, for all the sweet-tooths out there, scooping snow in a cup and adding sweet syrups of all flavors, depending on the flavor you desire, is another great treat that you can only enjoy for certain months of the year.
Graham Frank, the sophomore class president, says, “I love to play outside with the snow. It’s a once-a-year experience that I love to take advantage of with my friends and family.” For people like Graham, you will surely enjoy these other activities!
First up is a snowball fight, which does require other people like family, friends, or even neighbors, but it is a great way to meet new people and create a competition in your very own backyard. Moreover, it is also suitable for all ages to enjoy and will surely bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Next up, even though it could be a little difficult, taking a walk around the neighborhood suited up in multiple layers in addition to snowpants, a hat, gloves, a coat, and boots, is great for those who have more of a desire to leave the house. Seeing new sites dressed up in snow and maybe even helping out a neighbor shovel during the walk is a great way to socialize while also getting in exercise.
For sophomore Benjamin McNamara, this is one of their favorite ways to spend the day, as they mentioned, ”Walking around my neighborhood lets me reset and take in the beauty of my town. Sometimes I even use my own snow shoes, which allow me to wander easily through the woods behind my house.”
