Overview/Preview
On Saturday, the number 6 seed Harbormen faced the number 11 seed Wildcats in the second round of the MIAA Division 1 Hockey Playoffs. The last time the two teams faced was on Christmas Eve, and the Harbormen won 6-3.
Pre-Game Dilemma
Tickets went on sale Friday around noon and sold out quickly due to limited seating. Many Weymouth fans complained that they were not able to get tickets because they were all sold out when they checked. Because of this, Weymouth students pushed for the site of the game to be changed. Despite their complaints, the game stayed at Pilgrim. Student Nathan Morris says, “I’m glad that the team and especially the seniors were able to get one more home game at Pilgrim.”
First Period
The first period started strongly for Hingham with an early goal by Cam McKenna to make it 1-0. Shortly after, Coleman Donahue scored to make it 2-0. In the first period, Hingham took 19 shots, scoring 2, and Weymouth was only able to shoot 2 shots, both being saved by James Whitmore.
Second Period
The second period was a similar story. McKenna scores the first goal of the period, followed by a second goal from Donahue to make it 4-0. Hingham took 8 shots in the second period, and Weymouth took 3.
Third Period
Weymouth became desperate, shooting their most shots out of the three periods with 5, but all were saved. The Harbormen were able to score 2 more goals to widen the lead. One from Nick Smith and another from Quinn Allen late in the period.
Other Stats
In total, the Harbormen took 33 shots compared to Weymouth’s 10. Whitmore saved all 10, including a diving save in the third period to prevent a wraparound goal from Weymouth.
What’s Next?
The Harbormen are set to face the 14th-ranked Arlington Catholic on Wednesday night for a trip to the Semi-Finals. Arlington Catholic recently took down the number 2 seed, Saint John’s Prep, with an upset win in the previous round. Student Thomas Sullivan says, “I’m excited to watch this matchup on Wednesday night, and I hope Hingham can keep the playoff run alive”.
