The anticipation has been building for Hingham High School Students as they gear up for the spring sports season. The season officially begins on March 16th, and many student athletes have been curious to see how the cards will play out for their teams this year. Hingham’s golf team in particular is expecting a successful season filled with wins, but most importantly, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Samantha Leary, the varsity coach, has big expectations for the spring season. She hopes for the team to continue its winning streak at the Patriot League and advance to the State Finals. Members of the team also aspire to continue their successful streak, yet they also note the importance of having fun in the midst of the pressure. Leary shares this view, stating that her goals are “first and foremost, to continue providing high school students of all levels the opportunity to learn the game of golf and have fun!”
There are many talented golfers who Leary expects to play a major role in the season. Strong players with standout previous seasons include the senior captains Finley Erick and Taylor Sullivan and Callie Crean, the Junior Captain. When asked about the upcoming season, Finley Erick said, “I am so excited for the start of spring sports! I can’t wait to start our season and get to know our new teammates!” In addition to the captains, Leary also expects a productive season from junior Ciara McGuinness, sophomore Sam McCabe, and sophomore Ella Halsing.
The team feels confident that their season will be triumphant; the captains have been leading captain’s practices throughout the snowy winter to prepare. HHS sophomore Addie Prindeville remarked, “I feel that the team may be able to win the championship this year due to our pre-season efforts.” Because the weather restricted the use of outdoor golf courses, the team practiced their swings indoors, at South Shore Country Club.
As for the golf team’s upcoming challenges, Leary as well as many Hingham golfers view Duxbury as one of the most difficult matches. It often determines which team will win the Patriot League.
One of the most unique aspects of Hingham’s golf program is the diverse range of each player’s skill level. This is one of the things that Leary is most proud about in coaching this group of players. She “takes pride in coaching and developing players of all skill levels into accomplished players who love the game of golf.” Additionally, the team is often commended for the camaraderie and sportsmanship between players. Lifelong golfer Michael Rogers observed that “the sportsmanship amongst the players is one of most admirable parts of the team.”
Supporters of the golf team are welcome to attend the home matches at South Shore Country Club and away matches at the opposing team’s home course. However, it is important to note that players can not be given advice, and spectators must walk at least 30 yards behind the group in the rough.
