With St. Patrick’s day right around the corner, many people begin to wonder how they would like to celebrate the holiday this year. There are many different activities that people enjoy participating on and around St. Patrick’s day, especially within the Boston area. Encore Boston, a hotel company located in the Boston area compiled a list of different activities available around St. Patrick’s day for those interested.
The list starts off strong with the Boston St. Patrick’s Day parade, a popular event which many people enjoy attending. This takes place on March 15, 2026 and starts at 11:30 am. The parade is well attended, with the turnout each year averaging over half a million people, so the article recommends to beat the crowds (Encore Boston).
Gabby Sacco, a sophomore at Hingham High School says that, “I have not celebrated St. Patrick’s day since I was little, but I remember it being so special and fun when I was younger, especially in elementary school. I think that the parade is a great option for teenagers and adults to also have fun with the holiday, and someday maybe I will attend!”
Next, an article from Visit MA, a Massachusetts travel site, recommends visiting one of the abundant Irish pubs that there remains no shortage of on the South Shore. Celebrating St. Patrick’s day with traditional Irish food is not only a festive and fun activity, but also delicious! Visit MA also gives recommendations of different Irish restaurants in the Boston area, such as The Black Rose, located on 160 State Street in Boston. The menu features many different traditional Irish dishes such as corned beef.

Finally, another popular way to celebrate the holiday is wearing green! According to an article from History.com 79% of people actually celebrate through adding a pop of green to their outfit on March 17. This tradition originated very early, some basing it on legends with leprechauns, but more likely, wearing green represents the color of the Great Irish Rebellion of 1641, which combatted the traditional British blue.
Dee Sweeney, a sophomore at Hingham High School states that, “I think that celebrating St. Patrick’s day is a fun way to make the month of March better, and I think that the best way to celebrate is wearing green and festive colors. I want to go to the parade in the future, as I have heard so many great things about it! I also think that having all of these celebrations is a great way to celebrate the strong Irish culture that is on the South Shore and surrounding areas.”
While these three ideas are very popular, many people have other traditions like making dishes such as Soda Bread with their family. No matter what traditions take place, spending time with family and friends is always the best way to celebrate any holiday. There are many different things people enjoy doing each year in order to celebrate, yet the parade, going to an Irish pub, and wearing green are also very enjoyable!
