Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden III, son of current vice president Joe Biden, died of complications from brain cancer on May 30 at the age of 46. Like his father, Biden had been an active Democratic politician. From January 2, 2007 to January 6, 2015, he served as the 44th Attorney General of Delaware. Before his death, Biden had declared his candidacy for Governor of Delaware in the upcoming 2016 election.

Although he first exhibited troubling medical symptoms in 2010, Biden wasn’t officially diagnosed with brain cancer until 2013, after going through what was referred to by White House officials as “an episode of disorientation and weakness.” Biden was then treated, through both radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Treatment was successful and his cancer appeared in remission.

However two weeks ago, on May 20, Biden was taken to the hospital, as his brain cancer had reappeared. He died in Betheseda, Maryland at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on May 30. A memorial service held on Thursday had over, 1000 people in attendance, all gathering to honor the tragically short life of Beau Biden.

He leaves behind a wife, Hallie Olivere Biden, and their two children, Natalie and Hunter.
