This Tuesday, February 2nd, was the quarterly annual school-wide Student Council assembly. Although hosted by seniors Brian McGinn and Katherine Riddell, the assembly began with announcements from various clubs. The Green Team, represented by Lulu Wiley, announced the 5th annual Green week, which will be held at the end of March. She also revealed an exciting new contest in which participants are asked to make art out of recycled materials, a tie in with the upcoming Green Week. All are encouraged to participate in this innovative and fun contest! Abby Donohue, a member of the Amnesty International club, promoted her club which focuses on human rights. A quick video was also shown which dealt with the Syrian refugee crisis, in which viewers were taken on a tour of a makeshift clinic in Syria where gunshot victims are treated/ The video served to highlight the lack of important resources in Syria and the current charged climate of the area. If interested, Amnesty meetings are held every Thursday at 7:30AM in Mr. George’s room. ADL, represented by Jackie Concannon and Melissa McCullough, revealed a banner that uses “Hingham” as an acronym to demonstrate Hingham High’s values and morals.

The banner was created thanks to the efforts of Mr. Doherty, Mr. Eschauzier, Ms. Connolly, Dr. Girouard McCann, and the students of Hingham High and four versions of the banner will be hung around the school.

Also discussed at the assembly was spirit week. Wednesday was “Holiday day” with each class representing a different holiday. Freshmen dressed as St. Patrick’s Day, sophomores were Halloween, juniors were Valentine’s Day, and seniors were the Fourth of July. Thursday was “Class colors day” with freshmen2 wearing white, sophomores wearing black, juniors wearing blue, and seniors wearing red.

The Clash of the Classes, which was held this past Thursday night, was also promoted. Representatives from each grade competed in silly challenges and the class that won the Clash donated all the proceeds raised to the charity of their choice. Seniors took the win. So, congratulations to those who competed for them: Maddie McKenzie, Katherine Riddell, Josh Crosby, and Evan Ayer.

In between updates on clubs and notes on upcoming school activities, students at the assembly participated in a lighthearted game. A person from each grade had to balance a donut on their nose and attempt to eat it without the donut falling off. Jeff Pinarchik, a freshman, took the win for the first assembly.

During the assembly, a moment of silence was held for Christopher Orlando, the 2010 Hingham High graduate and air force member who recently died in a plane crash in Hawaii.

Additionally, a Hingham High men’s volleyball league was announced. Mr. Nugent will head this endeavor and can be found in room 285 if more information is required. A video of volleyball highlights was shown at the assembly, to ramp up excitement for this exciting new sporting option.

Also notable was the work of MC, Brian McGinn. Olivia Reavey, who attended the first assembly commented on his hosting ability saying, “Brian McGinn’s enthusiasm was contagious.”
