Mozart: A Celebration of Genius Showcases Student Talent
May 22, 2016
On Thursday evening, May 19th, the Hingham High School Music Department presented Mozart: A Celebration of Genius at St. Paul Parish in downtown Hingham. The last rays of evening sunlight streamed into the church through the open windows and created a lovely atmosphere for the concert. The acoustics in the church also provided for a great performance.
Directed by Mr. Young, the performance was mostly composed of chorus students from Hingham High School. The chorus students were also accompanied by talented fellow musicians from the High School and also professional musicians.
Prior to the first piece, Mr. Young provided the audience with some of his expert knowledge of Mozart and his work. A small, talented group of Chamber Singers then performed Agnus Dei. The lovely voices of the students filled the church and absolutely delighted the audience.
Following the Chamber Singers, the Concert Chorale assembled on the altar. Once again, Mr. Young expertly narrated Mozart’s life and work for the audience through this transition. The Concert Chorale performed two of Mozart’s compositions. Freshmen Rachel Ader and Will Sutton were featured soloists. Additionally, fellow students from the high school, Kristine McLellan, Kaylee Hill, Noah Goodman and Joanna Randall, accompanied the Concert Chorale on flute and clarinet.
Next, the Choral Spectrum took the altar to perform two more of Mozart’s compositions, Sancta Maria and Ave Verum Corpus. They were closely followed by the Mixed Chorus. Featured soloists in the Mixed Chorus were Natalie Gebhardt, Cate Grosskopf, Patrick Bird and Julian Gilmartin.
Mr. Young then took a short intermission before recognizing the senior chorus students and distributing Chorus Awards. The four seniors, Molly Rabinovitz, Josh Crosby, Evan Ayer and Julia Murphy each received a gift from Mr. Young. Several other students also received awards for their outstanding achievement and dedication to Chorus.
The performance then concluded with a joint effort from the Mixed Chorus and the Concert Chorale. They gave a lovely rendition of Regina Coeli. Molly Schwall, Julia Murphy, Patrick Bird and Justin Moczynski were featured soloists.
Overall, Mozart: A Celebration of Genius was a lovely showcase of student talent and dedication. According to junior Sarah Calame, who was and audience member, “the Chorus sounded beautiful”. Sarah, as well as the rest of the audience, was thoroughly impressed with the amount of music that was prepared so nicely in just a few months.
