The Start of Fall
September 25, 2016
As the leaves begin to change color and the weather starts to get chilly, fall is heavily upon us and so is school. Many students fret over the first month or so of high school. The first month can be loaded with stress, especially since most students are still on summer mode. However, the excitement of going back to see old friends and teachers cannot go amiss. Though quite common to feel jittery, a lot of students are just feeling the nerves of getting back into routine.
Fall is an adjustment period. The sun sets earlier along with changes in temperature and the atmosphere begins to shift. Students go from spending the day lounging around outside or working a summer job to pouring over books at home. It always feels so extreme. Especially handing in summer assignments, those are the first grades to go into X2. The pressure to start off on a good note can be overwhelming. Not to mention the number of books teachers give students, it can be a massive overload.
From the first week, super homeroom paperwork needs to get signed immediately and fall sports physicals by then are way overdue. The first two weeks are the most difficult for figuring out how to get through the week, but slowly and surely it gets better.
Walking through the halls, for some once again and for others the first time, students and teachers warmly welcome each other back settling in. It can be tricky for freshmen and admittedly old students trying to navigate the hallways for the first bit of school, but soon everybody has their schedule memorized. It is always exciting to finally see who is in whose class and what lunch blocks students will have this year. In the moment, the weight of it all can see immense, but there is no denying a fresh start.
Senior Sarah Smith, like so many others, cannot wait to finally begin her last year of high school. Despite those past long nights, the eagerness is infectious. Sarah exclaims, “I’m so excited that school has started because I get to look forward to seeing my friends, old and new teachers, and applying to colleges!” Though summer is perfect for regaining energy, nothing compares to seeing students’ friends and the next step for success. Fall is like the New Year, it is the next chapter of a high school student’s life.
