High School is generally a time of personal growth and new freedoms, such as getting your license. However, with these freedoms comes responsibility. Therefore, many students in high school start working. Although it may seem hard to find a job at first, there are several companies in our community where high school students often go for jobs. Yet, finding a place that is hiring and going through the application process can be daunting and overwhelming for many students. Sometimes, checking out your own community can offer unknown opportunities.
Derby Street is a popular spot for many students at Hingham High School and often the stores here are looking for help. In fact, junior Finley Erick works at Cativo, a clothing store in Derby Street located next to Chipotle. Finley explains that in order to get the job “I checked in with the manager of the store and got an interview scheduled. I ended up getting a job and have had a great experience!” Walking in to stores and seeing if they are hiring can be a great way to find your first job!
Additionally, many students at Hingham High go into the restaurant business. One place that is often hiring students for that position is Linden Ponds. Junior Addie Phelan works there currently. Addie explains “I applied for my job online on their website and a couple days later they contacted me to set up an interview. The interview was really easy and I got the job. Once I got the job, I had to fill out some papers and get my work permit from the front office.” This demonstrates another place of work and another revenue of seeking work. If going into stores to see if they are hiring sounds too intimidating for you, instead you can follow Addie’s example and apply online first!
If neither of these areas of work are of interest to you, you can also go for something more interest-oriented. For example, Carolyn Downey works at Head Over Heels, a gymnastic gym. Carolyn explains “I grew up at the gym and recently reached out to the owner and she wanted me to come back and coach the little kids”. In this case, Carolyn was able to use her past experiences to get hired at a place oriented with her interests.
Overall, there are several different ways in which students can seek out companies who are hiring and taking inspiration from the examples above may help you to find your first job!
