Daffodil Days: Raising Money and Raising Hope

Rachel Jensen, Junior Editor

Despite a two year hiatus, the generous support of students, parents, and the entirety of the school community allowed the Daffodil Days campaign at Hingham High School to once again be very successful this year. The campaign raised $1,372 for the American Cancer Society. The proceeds from the campaign go to research to help find the causes and cures for cancer, to programs for cancer patients and their families, and to organizations that rally communities to ultimately help save lives.

In order to make the campaign possible, American Cancer Society partnered with 1800FLOWERS.COM, Inc. to make bouquets of daffodils available to those interested. This year, 98 bouquets were purchased by the Hingham High community, and the campaign will deliver the flowers between March 1 and March 11, 2016.

The Hingham High campaign would also not be possible without the amazing coordination of Administrative Assistant, Monica Black. Mrs. Black was motivated to get involved in the campaign as her son had a brain tumor at a young age. He is now 29 years old and completely healthy. Mrs. Black has been involved with the Daffodil Days campaign at Hingham High since the beginning in 2010. According to Mrs. Black, she knows that the campaign is valuable to the school community as the flowers can “bring a smile to everyone’s face”.

In the past six years, Mrs. Black has raised over $10,000 for the American Cancer Society through the campaign and her coordination efforts. Although the opposite was previously reported, the Daffodil Days fundraiser will continue in years to come. She hopes that the campaign can continue to grow in the Hingham High community. In fact, she plans for next year’s campaign to be even bigger and better than previous years.

When the bouquets of flowers arrive in early March, Mrs. Black knows that the daffodils will serve as “the first sign of spring and a sign of hope”.
