Wednesday, October 21, Hingham High School’s music department showed off its talent in the first concert of the year.

The concert band and wind ensemble, led by Brian Cincotta, played two pieces each. The concert band played “El Captain,” by John Philip Sousa, a popular piece amongst the musicians. “It is a fun song to play to.  It’s a great march,” said flute player Bailey Hull.

The concert band also played parts of John Carnahan’s “Antelope Play.” The wind ensemble played “Contre Qui Rose,” by Morten Lauridsen, a piece which was adapted from a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, and “Awakening Hills” by Richard Saucedo.

The Orchestra, led by Phaedre Sassano, performed “Scheherazade” by Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov, and “Themes from the Mauldou” by Bedrich Smetana.

The chorus, led by Johnathan Abrams, sang lovely renditions of “Hear My Prayer” by William Murphy, “Nunc Dimittis,” a hymn from the New Testament, “Lift Thine Eyes,” from Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and “Softly Little Child,” by Daniel E. Gawthrop.

Excellent job by the Band, Orchestra, and Chorus!
