Halloween; a time filled with spooky decorations, kids having the time of their lives, and fun festivities. Every year on October 31st, the most common activity is trick or treating for younger children, however once people get older, around high school and on, trick or treating gets rather awkward. Here are some of the possible things that could be traditional, yet stil be fun.
First is setting up Halloween decorations in front of your house; things like blow up skeletons, pumpkins or even lights that portray images. Although it may not be the most enjoyable activity, not only does it create a festive mood in town, but it makes the community come together in a friendly competition. For example, Nate Kenniston, a Junior at Hingham high school mentions, “Something that my family has done ever since I was young is get into a competition with my neighbors on who has the better decorations. For the past few years, we have had the upper hand but this year it is a much closer competition.”
An activity that could be more enjoyable for those who are creative is the pumpkin carving contest, or even making Jack O’ Lanterns to set up outside of your house. Brendan Kerr, another Junior at Hingham High School supports this idea by saying, “Something me and my sister Sophie have done since we were little is carve pumpkins and whoever made the worse pumpkin gives it to my dog Tucker, who hates pumpkins, for it to be smashed. For some reason it gets super competitive and everyone has a great time, including Tucker.”
Furthermore, an activity that can be fun no matter who attends is going to Barrett’s haunted mansion. After a personal experience there last Halloween, I truly recommend it to those who like to be spooked. Although, if you plan on going make sure to be prepared to wait in line for at least thirty minutes as it gets very occupied during the season because it is very well known in the south shore. One suggestion for Barrett’s haunted mansion is to take it slow and really enjoy the experience because it isn’t that long and the best parts happen when you take it slow. Overall, Halloween is a great part of the year to spend time with family and friends through a variety of activities.
