United States president, Donald J. Trump has sparked some controversy in the political world by making a statement last Sunday supporting and endorsing the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. President Trump has said on his social media pages that Netanyahu has been a “Great Warrior Prime Minister, and an even greater Partner For Peace in combating the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
With the Israel Prime Minister elections quickly approaching on October 27–the first election since 2023–the two parties, the Likud (conservative) and the Yesh Atid (democratic) are neck and neck to win. This digital endorsement from Trump has definitely given a small edge to Netanyahu and his party, but critics are still skeptical about how much impact this is going to have on the results of the election.
The friendship between the two political leaders started back in 2025 when the United States and Israel worked together to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities. In June of that year, Trump heavily criticized Israel’s attacks on a key Iran gas field early in the war, calling Netanyahu “crazy,” yet later on his social media, he claimed they were still friends.
This online endorsement from the President might just end up turning the tides on this tight race for Prime Minister of Israel, but people are saying there is still no predicting what the outcome of the election will be.
“[Trump’s] statement doesn’t really surprise me.” says freshman HHS student Rory O’Toole when asked his thoughts on it. He goes on to add that “Most of what Israel does is almost always influenced by the US government.” Similarly, “I think Trump supporting either party would make people mad.” stated freshman Teddy Rickets, “He shouldn’t support either side.” He adds when asked what he thinks Trump should do.
With Israel’s elections approaching rapidly on the 27th of this month and tensions rising, the world does not yet know the impact of this endorsement, however, once the results are publicly announced after the elections, it may just become clear. Perhaps, Trump will ultimately give the edge that Netanyahu needs in order to win this election and remain the Prime Minister of Israel.
