This past Friday night, September 11, was the first game of the season for the Harbormen football team after training all year long in the weight room and on the field. Hingham took on the Hanover Hawks away at Hanover High School. According to local sports journalists, Hingham was predicted to lose 18-16 in the game; however, the team beat the odds and they walked away with a win. The score was not even close to what was predicted, as Hingham won 35-0. Now the Harbormen are turning heads as they enter their next few games.
Last year, the Hingham High School football team was 8-3, one of the best records in years. Among their biggest accomplishments was taking down their rival, Duxbury, after an 18-year-long losing streak. The football team also made it to the second round of the playoffs, which again was impressive as they hosted both games, reflecting their win percentage of the season.
Unfortunately, after 14 seniors graduated and the team lost some players to private schools, there was a lot of turnover heading into the 2026 season. As a result, the team is pretty new and they have very big shoes to fill as they take on new opponents throughout the fall. Winter Griffin, a junior middle linebacker on the football team adds, “it has been a great experience being able to learn and adapt to this scenario of filling in the shoes of the seniors who left. Although I have people who are in the same spot as me, it is still nerve racking and difficult. Yet, based on the results of Hanover’s game, we are definitely figuring out how to work together in these large roles.”
On Friday the 18th, the Harbormen are taking on the Abington Green Waves for the home opener. Last time the two faced off, Hingham fell just short, losing 26-27. However, this time, it is a different story. Abington faced Longmeadow last Friday night (when Hanover played Hingham) and Abington walked away with a 43-21 win. Both teams are coming off a win, but Abington is predicted to win the matchup, but as previously seen, predictions can frequently be misguiding.
This Friday night, the win all comes down to which team has a better defensive performance, holding off the other from scoring. It will be intense and competitive, but the team could not be more ready as they continue to prepare for their home opener. Harper Ewer, a junior lineman on the Hingham football team said, “Throughout this week in practice, people have been focused and are getting prepared in a way that I haven’t seen before. We are all contributing to the goal of beating Abington in our own individual ways: supporting our teammates and aiming for success.”
With many exciting games coming up in the Hingham football schedule, the Harbormen football team will certainly be fun to watch this fall.
