As junior year marks the end of MCAS testing, it also introduces a new set of standardized exams: the SAT and ACT. Between challenging coursework, busy extracurriculars, and the pressure of college preparation, juniors face an increasingly demanding academic year. With standardized testing, such as the SAT and ACT, approaching, students at Hingham High School navigate a key moment in their high school careers.
Hingham High juniors are set to take the PSAT on October 17 or October 30 at the high school. Officially known as the Preliminary SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), the exam allows students to familiarize themselves with the format and content of the SAT while identifying areas for improvement. Additionally, qualifying scores may provide students with opportunities through recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
For many juniors, the PSAT represents their first experience with SAT-style testing, although some previously took the Preliminary ACT as sophomores or have already taken the SAT.
Ahead of Homecoming weekend, students expressed their expectations and concerns about the upcoming exam. Charlotte McViney says, “I’m nervous about the PSAT, it is stressful, adding on to all the other schoolwork we have as juniors. However, having already taken the SAT, I feel prepared.”
Following the PSAT taken on October 17, other students reflected on their experiences. “I thought it was hard on certain modules, but overall easy on others. I have an SAT booked, so now I feel more prepared to take the actual test after the PSAT,” said Allie Korn.
Other students found the exam less intimidating than anticipated. Shelby Stroka said, “The PSAT was easier than I thought! I was worried about running out of time, but I finished with enough time left.”
Margaret D’Souza echoes Stroka, “The PSAT was stressful going into it, but I felt more confident knowing what the test and format were like after.
With preparing for college admissions comes SAT and ACT testing. While many juniors took the PSAT last weekend, other students will wait until October 30 to take the test. Overall, students are approaching the challenge with preparation and perspective.
