The Los Angeles Dodgers have won the 2024 World Series, defeating the Yankees in the series 4-1. This large deficit was mostly due to the Dodgers’ star studded lineup which they built up over the years. Before creating a superteam, the Dodgers were still a World Series caliber team, but after they picked up Freddie Freeman, Shohei Ohtani, and Mookie Betts over the past four years, they have become almost unstoppable. Even though the Yankees had a solid team, and they were able to pick up Juan Soto, Jazz Chisolm, and others in the offseason, their lineup was not strong enough to beat this powerhouse of a Dodgers team.
There were many players that had large effects on the outcome of this series on both sides of the ball. Freddie Freeman had an astounding four home runs and twelve RBIs in the series. One of these home runs was a walk-off grand slam, allowing them to win game one. In almost every game Freeman looked incredible, and he may have really been the deciding factor in this World Series. Many expected Shohei Ohtani to be the real deciding factor, but that is not the case, with him not even having a single home run. Even though he played great, Freeman really outshined him, and all other players in the series. He was a major part of every game, winning the World Series MVP for a reason. Another standout player was Dodgers pitcher, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who only allowed one hit in six innings when he hit the mound in game two. Even though this hit was a home run, his pitching allowed for the Dodgers to achieve a 4-2 victory.
Following the same path, game three was decided by the Dodgers’ pitcher, Walker Buehler after only allowing two hits, and no runs, in his five innings pitched. This incredible showing boosted them to another victory. The pitching was really a deciding factor and the pitchers for the Dodgers were incredible. On the other team, Anthony Volpe played incredible, with a home run, a double, and two singles in game four, keeping the Yankees from getting swept. Aaron Judge also had an incredible game five, with a home run and a double, even though that was not enough to secure the win. Overall this World Series was far more competitive than it looks on paper.
Hingham High School students have many different opinions on the outcome. When asked what he thought about the World Series, Hingham High Junior Troy Liebovici said, “As a Bostonian, it’s good to see the Yankees lose.” Others expected the win and thought the Dodgers were going to win all along. HHS Junior Will Crespi said, “The Dodgers played great throughout the playoffs, I would’ve been surprised if the Yankees pulled through.” This was an incredible moment for LA and the entire Dodgers franchise, and if they stay the way they are they will be a problem for teams for years to come.
