The academic school year of 2026-2027 began this past Tuesday, September 1st, and many students are already having mixed emotions about being back at it. Many upperclassmen are already feeling the stress of APs and multiple hours of homework on the first nights, while the underclassmen are still trying to find their way and how they fit in at HHS. While these first days can be an exciting yet stressful time, there are many ways to get help as students navigate this year.
When Sarah Hardiman was asked about how she was feeling this year being back at school, she explained that she was already feeling the pressure of her course load, and that getting back into school was much more difficult than she thought. However, she also explained that prioritizing her homework each night and staying motivated throughout the year is how she has found to be successful in the classroom.
Grace Mullen, a junior at Hingham High School, also displayed similar feelings, but she also recognized it is not as bad now that she is an upperclassman. When asked about some tips to give to the newer freshmen, she said, “Staying organized and having good time management is key. Also, while it may be fun in the short term, don’t let your social life take over and stop you from doing your work, and most importantly, don’t be afraid to be yourself; it’s better than trying to be someone else.”
Although the upperclassmen were stressed this week, they were not the only ones. Majority of the new freshmen at Hingham High School found the building to be confusing as they were trying to find all their classes on time. When asked about how her first week went, Katherine Passeggio, a freshman, described, “Although it seemed scary at first, I am getting used to the building, and I can definitely see why so many students like it here. I am excited to continue to meet new people, especially upperclassmen, and create new memories throughout the year!”
Although the consensus is that many students already miss the summertime, and even the senior countdown has already begun in the cafeteria, try to make the most of the year and enjoy it while it lasts. Good luck to all the students at HHS!!
