As the month of May winds down and summer break is just on the horizon, it is finally time for the Spring sports playoffs to begin for high schools across the state. This Spring, several Hingham teams performed well enough to earn a spot in the MIAA Playoffs. The sports competing for a MIAA title this spring in bracket play are: Baseball ( #9), Boys Lacrosse (#7), Girls Lacrosse (#3), Boys Tennis (#8), Girls Tennis (#4), and Rugby (#5). In addition, Girls Golf, Track and Field, Crew, and Sailing are all sending athletes to the statewide competitions.
Baseball #9 Seed (12-8)
The Harbormen boys capped off a strong season with a win over Billerica on Saturday. Led by St. Lawrence Commit Colin Garrity and a strong core of Senior, Junior, and Sophomore talent, Hingham Baseball is poised for a deep title run. “It’s been a lot of fun this year building a team culture that’s focused on having fun every day and also working towards winning,” exclaimed Senior Captain Colman Donahue. “We’ve worked hard all season and we’re ready to show it now in the playoffs.” Hingham Baseball plays #24 Nashoba Regional at home on Monday at 4:30.
Boys Lacrosse #7 Seed (14-5)
The Boys Lacrosse team concluded another successful season facing some of the top competition in the MIAA. Powered by a strong senior class with young standout players like Freshman Teddy Lovendale and Sophomore Goalie Ned Wittman, Harbormen lax has the experience and talent to put up a good fight against any team in the Division II MIAA Playoffs. The Harbormen won round one of the playoffs 10-3 over Barnstable and look to get a step closer to the state title next week.
Girls Lacrosse #3 Seed (17-2)
After a dominant regular season, Girls lacrosse sets their eyes on a state championship. Led by Seniors Libby Rogers, and Emily Kiernan- as well as a Junior class with multiple division one commits- if any Hingham team is destined to make a state title run this spring, Girls Lacrosse is one of the top choices. The girls defeated their first round opponent Northampton handedly by a score of 10-0. They play #19 seeded Melrose on May 31st at Home.
Girls Tennis #4 (16-3)
After a dominant first round performance in the MIAA Division II Tennis Tournament, winning 5-0 versus Somerville, Hingham Girls Tennis is proving that their playoff performance is looking to be a continuation of their impressive regular season. Girls tennis has standout talent across the roster, and their depth in both the singles and doubles categories has helped them take down top programs like Bishop Feehan during the regular season. “I would say we have just as much fun playing as we do trying to win,” noted Junior Reese Studebaker. “Practices and Games have been something we’ve looked forward to the whole year and I think it is paying off for us now for sure.”
Boys Tennis #8 Seed (15-2)
Boys Tennis had another incredibly solid year, finishing with a formidable record of 15-2 and coming second in the Patriot League behind Duxbury. After defeating Somerset Berkeley Regional 5-0 in the first round, Hingham will play Reading Memorial on June 1st at Hingham High School.
While Girls Softball and Boys Rugby have already seen their seasons come to an unfortunate end early in the playoffs, both teams had impressive regular seasons and performed well enough to qualify for the state tournament in their respective sport. The MIAA playoffs time and time again prove to be one of the most exciting parts of the school year, bringing together the athletes that work so hard to excel at their sport with the fans who want to support their friends and show school spirit, as Hingham pushes on forwards towards another state Championship.
