After a long and successful fall season of athletics, with success ranging from a boys and girls dual state champions for crew, a final four appearance from field hockey, and a boys soccer finals appearance, Hingham sports now transitions into the winter season. As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, there is no better time to start up sports fit for the season.
Of note, the boys Hingham basketball program is looking to carry out the same success that many of the fall sports have experienced. The Hingham basketball program has had its fair share of great seasons in the past, making it a storied and respected program. As far as recent years goes, Hingham basketball has been lucky enough to achieve a Patriot League championship during the 2013, 2018, 2019, and 2022 seasons as well as a historical south sectional appearance during the 2018 season, in which they lost to a juggernaut in Boston Tech. Coach Bob Kniffen, going into his 18th year as head coach and 21st year of being in the Hingham basketball program, is looking forward to future successes.
After going 11-11 in during the last season, Hingham basketball is looking to hit the ground running this year as they face a highly competitive Patriot League schedule. Eight players are returning from the previous season, and the team is looking to add some key players to the squad, while maintaining high hopes for the upcoming season. Senior captain Alex Levy mentioned, “I think we can be a really tough team this year. We have a solid amount of athletic and skilled players that are returning from last year, and we definitely will receive some help from younger players making the varsity team this year.” With tryouts coming up in the first week of December, the Hingham program will finalize their roster of returning players, and new young talent.
There is no doubt that the Hingham basketball program faces a daunting schedule every year, as the Patriot League hosts a variety of south shore talent. This year is no exception. Hingham looks to face a very talented Catholic Memorial team for the home opener on December 15th. Catholic Memorial experienced a semi-final playoff run in the state tournament last year. Along with many other strong opponents such as Hingham’s rivals Duxbury and Scituate, the demanding 22 game schedule will be a series of tests for the 24-25 Hingham basketball team. Senior captain Matty Cummings commented, “I think that the high level of competition will ultimately elevate the level that we play this season. I am really looking forward to getting started.” With a combination of talent, coaching, and support for the HHS’s Red Army, Hingham basketball seeks to achieve many victories on the hardwood this winter.
