This summer had one of the greatest impacts on the acting and music industries due to new movies, shows, and rising stars. The Odyssey, Disclosure Day, Obsession, Toy Story 5, Voicemails for Isabelle, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Don’t Say Good Luck are movies released over the summer, to name a few. All of these movies were wildly successful and well-liked by their audiences.
Specific movies grossed over a billion dollars in the box office, like The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. These movies were especially popular due to their recognizable cast including Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway. Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernathal appeared in both of these movies. Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed 2.4 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie in the Spider-Man franchise. Hingham High Student, Hailey Catafalno says, “The newest Spider-Man movie was so good. I was hooked the entire time.” Many other students said the same thing about this movie, claiming that it was the best of the franchise.
Some movies weren’t released in theaters, but were Netflix hits. Voicemails For Isabelle and Don’t Say Good Luck are two examples of this. Voicemails For Isabelle was a heartfelt rom-com about a grieving girl leaving voicemails to her dead sister, but a stranger finding them and falling in love from afar. It stars Nick Robinson, Zoey Deutch, and Nick Offerman. Hingham High student, Annika Goeldner says, “I really love rom-coms, so I definitely rewatched Voicemails For Isabelle plenty of times!” Don’t Say Good Luck wasn’t as popular as Voicemails For Isabelle, but it brought tears to viewers’ eyes with its heartwarming theme.
Similar to popular Netflix movies were popular Netflix shows. The best example of a popular Netflix show was the newest season of Outer Banks. Picking up where season four left off, season five brought the action, drama, and entertainment. Makayla Margetts says, “I watched the new Outer Banks season and I thought it was really good. I don’t want to give spoilers, but I thought it had an interesting ending.” Many students had mixed reviews on the ending, with some saying that the season was bad and others saying it was good.
As for the most popular music over the summer, many of the songs were of different genres. Most prominent was the song “Ain’t In LA” by Adéla. This was the third single from Adéla’s first album called Prima. This song was heard all throughout social media, taking over everyone’s For You pages. When I asked Hailey Catafalno about this song when interviewing her, she claimed she loved it. “Adéla might be my new favorite artist if she keeps releasing stuff like ‘Ain’t In LA’.” Another song that gained massive popularity over the summer was “Choosin’ Texas” by Ella Langley. This song allowed Ella to get great attention nationwide, with many people calling themselves “Ella Fellas”.
All of these songs, movies, and shows helped influence what people talked about and what people did over the summer.
