Global Citizenship Program is an international educational development project which teaches youth how to understand global topics/issues, and connect with a vast variety of cultures. A set of requirements which includes classes, a project, international trip or activity, and participation in the GCP Symposium at the end of their senior year, just begins to encapsulate what GCP is all about.
Gabby Sacco, a junior at HHS, has been an active member of GCP since the end of her freshman year of high school. Gabby explains that, “My favorite event of the entire year was the symposium. I loved seeing all of the different projects which the seniors put so much effort and hard work into. It makes me feel so excited to do the symposium. I am planning on visiting my sister in Italy next year for my project, and I am so excited to get started!” Gabby’s sister was an active member of the GCP club as well, and she loved the experience.
Another positive factor of GCP is that the club is selective, and putting your best work forward always matters. The application includes short-essay questions, a copy of your transcript, language class requirements, and a minimum GPA of 2.5. Each year, the club takes applications in the late spring, and they are due by May 20th at 2:35 pm. One benefit that comes with the selectivity of the club is that everyone is genuinely invested in learning about new cultures and enhancing their knowledge. Oftentimes, people join clubs to pad their resume and get into colleges. However, the workload that comes with GCP and interest in cultures and global traditions greatly benefits the community of the club.
Amelia Byrne is the current event chair and Junior Officer on the GCP Board. When asked about why she joined, Amelia says, “I joined GCP because I was super interested in finding out more about other countries and cultures, and I think it’s an amazing way to educate yourself about what’s going on in the world. I’m super excited to be a part of the exec board this year and be able to do my own global research and host fun events. I’m especially excited for our homecoming stand where we will be selling cookies decorated by members of GCP at my event on October 16th!”
As the club continues to grow here at HHS, a GCP community emerges where people want to learn more about different cultures and heighten their understanding of diversity.
