Patriots’ new cornerback, Darrelle Revis.

As the school year and all the work that comes with it lurks around the corner, Football is back! It’s a love hate relationship, school and football. Monday nights aren’t so bad because of Monday Night Football, and the week always seems to move faster as Thursday Night Football approaches. Overall, it is fantastic. Between high school, college, and pro football, five of the seven days are filled with football.

After the Patriots near magical comeback in last year’s AFC Championship game, they look to rebound in the 2014-2015 season and take it a step further and bring home the first Super Bowl title since 2005. Robert Kraft made some very aggressive moves this offseason that I really like; one of the downfalls that the Patriots had last season was a lack of depth on the defensive side of the ball. Belichick’s system has always been a “plug and play” style, and unfortunately last year, the defense did not meet those standards.

After Aqib Talib got injured against the Saints with a hip injury, the Patriots saw an increase in passing yards per game. While Alfonso Dennard did very well in Talib’s absence, there was a clear indication that the Patriots were not as strong in the secondary. Once Talib left for an absurd amount of money to the Denver Broncos, Kraft and the Pats went out and signed Darelle Revis and Brandon Browner, two of the leagues top cornerbacks. A few years ago I couldn’t even fathom Revis being in a Patriots jersey, wearing Ty Law’s number 24, but now he is here, tormenting wide receivers, and making Patriots fans more than happy. Browner is also the same way, he has played incredibly well in his first few seasons with the Seahawks, and once he serves his 4 game suspension for PED use, the Patriots secondary will make quarterbacks wish they didn’t exist.

In other news, the playoff push in the MLB is on. However, because Sportscenter only talks about the NFL preseason and LeBron James, they are missing out on one of the best ends to a season. Of course this is the year the Red Sox decide to not compete, in each division in the MLB, barring the AL East, the top two teams in each division are within a few games of each other. The most exciting races happen to be the AL Central and AL West. In the central, the Kansas City Royals are easily the hottest team in the bigs, absolutely enfuego, riding off of the hot bat of left fielder Alex Gordon, and the outstanding pitching of James Shields, the Royals are making a push to make the playoffs for the first time since 1985. Also in their division is the Detroit Tigers, who have the last three(!!!) Cy Young winners in their pitching rotation: Justin Verlander (who throws cheddar), Max Scherzer, and David Price. Price was acquired from Tampa Bay on the trade deadline this year.

Alongside the star-studded staff, Rick Porcello, their fourth starter in the rotation, has 15 wins this year with a 3.08 ERA, arguably the best staff in the league. Oh, they also have Miguel Cabrera, one of the best hitters in the MLB, hands down. Meanwhile, the LA Angels and Oakland Athletics are tied upon the top of the AL West. The Angels offense is outstanding, with 23 year old phenom Mike Trout in the heart of the order. Oakland doesn’t have the best offense, but the pitching staff after acquiring Jon Lester from the Red Sox, easily can pitch that team to the fall classic, or World Series.
