This year, the Class of 2027 decided to start a new senior year tradition: a senior sunrise at Hingham Bathing Beach. The class had the option to wake up bright-and-early at 5am to make it to the sunrise at 5:45am on September 8, 2026. Many chose to do so, and it turned out to be a beautiful morning.
Looking out at the water, there were endless boats and groups of friends to watch. Some Harbormen were already setting sail while others were still sleeping, which was very apparent as the downtown had a calm and quiet feel to it. Students were enjoying munchkins on beach towels, as well as bundling up on trunk beds.
Although a beautiful and reviving morning sunrise, it did include waking up at daybreak. Lucy Eagleson, nevertheless, said, “I felt as though it made me feel more sociable during the daytime later on when I would say hi to people in school that I would not normally say hi to.” Lucy witnessed firsthand how sunrises can actually increase your mood and energy throughout the day. So, one perk of this tradition is that sunrises can eliminate the feeling of “slump” and instead start your day on a high note.
Isabel Klein, a senior at Hingham High, thought “it was a great way to start the day with friends and start a senior tradition.” Klein brings up a point that the Class of 2027 is the first class to do a senior sunrise in the past years. The purpose of this sunrise is not only to have fun and socialize with each other, but also to start a tradition that future grades and generations will be able to replicate.
Class of 2027 Secretary Morgan Childs had the idea of this senior sunrise over the summer. She wanted to do a senior sunrise at the beginning of the year, with the horizon symbolizing the year’s beginning and the senior traditions ahead that we have to look forward to. At the end of the school year, the Class of 2027 will have a senior sunset. The sun setting will symbolize the end of our time at HHS, where they will reminisce on the many special memories that they made over the year—Friday football games, Harborbowl, Senior Assassin, Prom, Graduation, and everything in between.
