Following an unusual four years, the class of 2022 ended their time at HHS with a graduation ceremony Saturday morning. The ceremony was held on the school’s turf field, and friends and family watched from the bleachers as graduates received their diplomas.

Mr. Swanson, HHS’s principal, opened the ceremony. He remarked on the class’s ability to overcome adversity during their time at HHS. Class Salutatorian Matthew Carr followed and gave a humorous speech in which he reflected on his time at HHS. Following Matthew, class valedictorian Dominic Kanter gave a speech, in which he emphasized the resilience faced by his peers during the past four years. Student speaker Elle Cavanaugh was next. Her speech, which was structured like a five-paragraph essay, was well-received. Class President Luke Macdonald gave a reflective speech, in which he honored his classmates saying, “I believe that this class has made a conscious effort, especially recently,  to leave this high school a better, more inclusive place than it was when we came in as freshmen.” He continues, noting that he is “proud to have been able to hold my position and witness his effort.”

Following the speeches, all of the graduates were called to receive their diplomas.

“I thought the ceremony went off very smoothly and felt that it was a nice way to end a kind of crazy year.” Said Dominic Kanter to the Harborlight.  “At the end of the day, I am just very proud of my classmates and thankful to everyone who came out to support us today”

Speaking to the Harborlight, graduate Alex Denning was just as excited, saying, “I thought that the speeches were beautiful.” She added, laughing, “I thought I would cry when we threw our caps, but I didn’t.”

Anna Quinlivan, who passed two years ago, was honored by her classmates many times throughout the ceremony. Graduates wore teal ribbons on their robes, and her classmates honored her in their speeches. Dom Kanter reminded classmates that, “As we each go on our own paths from here, let’s honor Anna’s spirit and strive to be kind, humble, grateful and resilient.”
