All winter sports at Hingham High School are mid season and excelling! The sports played during this time of year vary from wrestling to ski team, among many others. Every team has had their own triumphs and successes, so far, and will continue to thrive throughout the rest of the winter season.
To start off, the Hingham High wrestling team is coming off their recent Holiday Tournament. In this tournament, Hingham placed sixth out of thirty-six teams — a strong outcome. Additionally, Ethan Kadish, a freshman at Hingham High school, came out victorious, placing first overall! The fourth place finisher, Ian Prebble, is also a student at Hingham High School.
Next, gymnastics has had major successes in their season thus far, being undefeated 6-0. Also, recently, the team had a very exciting outcome during a meet. The Hingham High gymnastics team scored a total of 136.45, an all time high for the team in over four years. Every member of this team is fully dedicated to their sport, and extremely excited to see where the rest of their season will take them.
Despite the boys basketball team not having the result they had hoped for during their last game against North Quincy, the final score being 68-55, they played extremely well. Gabe Tesler was the high scorer of the game with a total of twenty-one points for Hingham. This team is determined to close out their season with several wins, and continues to excel as a team.
The girls basketball team recently had a game against Marshfield High School, and unfortunately lost. However, the girls are excited to be hosting a double header fundraiser game against Whitman Hanson next Friday with the boys team. The Leadout Foundation aspires to make life easier for families and individuals affected by disability, and face accessibility and mobility challenges. Senior captain Caroline Connally says, “We are extremely excited for our double header game next Friday, and hoping that lots attend!” Girls basketball is also the team of Hingham’s most recent athlete of the week, Eileen Lowther!
Both of the hockey teams, girls and boys, have also had extremely exciting seasons. Hingham High Boys hockey has had a very promising season, their most recent game against Framingham ended with a score of 8-0 Hingham. When talking about his team, junior Sean Carroll said, “We are off to a great season so far. I think something that contributes to that is our team chemistry. We all push each other everyday and hope to get a ring with the boys.” The girls team has also had numerous great triumphs throughout their season including their domination in the Hingham Cup, beating NDA 4-2 for the first time in four years! Not only did the girls win this one game, but they have not lost a game yet. Freshman Sam McCabe mentioned that, “being 12-0 has made the environment for the team super positive and we all look forward to the future games and hopefully the garden.”
Furthermore, Hingham swim and diving has not had quite the results they were hoping for in the beginning of the season, however they have been working hard while training and staying optimistic. Their hard work and dedication has paid off in their recent wins against Silver Lake and Whitman-Hansen! While discussing their season, junior Lila Johnson said, “I am so proud of everyone’s hard work this season and everyone’s drive to continue to get better even when the results are discouraging.”
Winter track and field has had lots of races in the past weeks and also have many more they are looking forward to. Just last week both girls and boys track had a meet against Whitman-Hanson and dominated. They also had a meet against Duxbury this past week which unfortunately ended up in a loss for the girls with a score of 74-25. But, the boys came out on top with a score of 75-24! This win for the boys caused them to have a 3-0 record in league meets.
Another winter sport team, Ski Team, has had a triumphant start of their season. Junior captain Libby Rogers has yet to lose a race placing first for girls in all, including the most recent race at Ragged Mountain this Saturday, January 25. Also placing for girls in many races is freshman Eva Perine and sophomore Isabel Dubose. The boys team has placed third out of all teams in the Ski East League. John Doyle, sophomore, placed seventh place during Saturday’s race this week! Also, sophomore Charlie Harris said, “if you’re not falling you’re not trying” when talking about his pregame routine. “Everyone on this team is super supportive, and always encouraging each other. No matter the outcomes of meets everyone is always excited to hit the slopes” junior captain Asher Tarbey said.
As seen, all of these teams are making Hingham proud not only because of the outcomes of meets or games but because of their amazing sportsmanship and effort.
