Recently, the fall sports season came to an end. Congratulations to all of the fall sports teams and especially the seniors who just completed their final year of their high school fall sport. I spoke with field hockey’s senior captain Kaitlyn Manning who explained her feelings about the fall sports season ending. Manning noted, “I am so sad that our season had to come to an end but these past four years have been so much fun. I am so grateful to have had this team that made every practice something to look forward to and I am going to miss it so much!” Manning’s feelings mirror many other players who are sad their season had to end but so thankful that they were able to experience it.
Fortunately, we still have the winter season to look forward to. With a wide range of teams including boys and girls hockey, boys and girls basketball, dance team, gymnastics, ski team, boys and girls swim, indoor track, and wrestling, the winter season is sure to be exciting for Hingham High School students. While the athletes wait for their seasons to begin, many are preparing.
For example, the girls hockey team is excitedly gearing up for their season. Senior captain Catherine Flynn explained, “I am super excited for the upcoming season coming off such a successful one last year! I think we have a lot of talent on our incoming team and I think we’ll have a great group! To prepare, we played in a local league during summer vacation and in the fall we had captains practice. Most of our players also do club hockey, and we expect all players to be working hard on and off the ice so they can be at their best for the season.”
Similarly, Emily Kiernan, a captain of Hingham High School’s ski team, explained her enthusiasm for the season to begin. Kiernan described “Ski team is unlike a lot of other teams at the high school because the girls and boys teams work so closely together, so I am excited to be able to spend time skiing with the team and make new friendships with new members. To prepare we have dry land practice as a team on the turf and will be attending hot yoga as a group on Wednesdays.” Kiernan, like Flynn, noted her excitement for the new season and the ways the team has been preparing.
Furthermore, Ava Pappone, senior captain of the gymnastics team, spoke with me concerning how she feels about the upcoming season and what lies ahead for the gymnastics team this year. Pappone mentioned, “I am so happy to have my last season with the team. Last year we won the Patriot League championship and I am excited to see how we do this year with six new girls joining the team. We will have our first few practices and pasta parties coming up soon and I cannot wait to have everyone get together with our great coaches!”
Overall, the winter teams are eager to start their seasons. While the diverse teams prepare in different ways, it is safe to say that each team is ready to take on the new season and it will be exciting to see how they perform this winter!
