As we near the twenty-fifth anniversary of Hingham High’s Friday Show, it is important to recognize its efforts to create a meaningful tradition. The start of the final school day each week is marked by the airing of the Friday Show, done by students in the Television Production class who look to put a smile on students’ faces. Its ability to foster community through humorous skits and involvement in students’ lives highlights the tremendous school spirit that Hingham embodies.
Whether it has been a rigorous week or extracurricular activities outside of school tire students, the Friday Show seems to create excitement for everyone. It breaks the barrier of students’ nerves by encouraging an engaging atmosphere. At times, high school can feel divided by social hierarchies, friend groups, and grade-level separation. However, the Friday Show provides the opportunity to focus on school unity and positivity.
A pivotal member of this semester’s production, senior Henry Sellers, described his experiences so far, saying “I always loved the Friday Show each year, and now that I am a senior, I felt that taking the class would help carry on the tradition. I am happy to know that now and then I can make someone laugh who may be struggling, and I look forward to continuing skits and finding ways to embody Hingham High School.”
Not only does the Friday Show connect with students, but also with faculty and staff who like the weekly update. Explaining why she loves the production, Chemistry teacher Ms. Carney stated, “I enjoy the creativity of the students and seeing it all come together every week!”
A key factor of the show is the time that students spend editing and ensuring the content can be approved. Oftentimes, skits take additional work outside of school to ensure audible laughs. During semester one’s production, members travelled to Dave’s Hot Chicken to compete in a spice-eating contest. Not only was it funny to watch, but it also displayed the dedication of students who balance sports and home life.
When asked about the creative skits, sophomore Graham Frank explained, “I think it takes a certain character to produce these skits, and I know it takes a lot of time to produce. I am therefore grateful for their commitment to our school.”
To conclude, perhaps the most significant aspect of the Friday Show is its ability to enhance social skills to prepare certain individuals here at Hingham High for the future in which these relationships are vital. It effectively transforms the end of the week supported by celebration and humor rather than weariness and fatigue.
