This past Tuesday, the Harborwomen traveled to Concord-Carlisle for an intense match up. Both teams are strongly coached and have had strong wins boosting their power rankings. Both teams were excited for some competition and knew the game would be back and forth.
For Hingham, Maeve Maroney led the attack with 10 points, Kylie McAloon added 5 points, Ryan Haillsay and Mia Milligan each had 2 goals, and Emily Kiernan, Vivien Nicholas, and Eva Perine each had one, leading to Hingham scoring 17 total goals.
Both teams continuously pushed the pace throughout the game creating a highly competitive atmosphere. Hingham started down after the first quarter but managed to push away from the Patriots in both the 3rd and 4th quarters.
Caroline Leahy, Jenna Varholak, Maggie Corey, and Aria Giradino led the defense holding the patriots to 14 goals and contributing greatly to the win for the harborwomen! The defenders came up with many ground balls, helped the ball transition down the field, and caused many turnovers that were key to the win!
Stars from the patriots included Scarlet Mirak and Lindsay Cain, who helped push Concord Carlisle’s game pace creating strong competition for Hingham.
Hingham began to pull away during the 3rd and 4th quarters leading by 3 but later in the 4th quarter the Patriots scored 2 goals creating their final score of 14.
Vivien Nicholas’s key takeaways from the game are: “The win was a huge one for us and definitely a momentum gain for the team. The entire team worked together and everyone played their part for an entire team effort.” The Harborwomen worked continuously to fight for their spot against the top team in division 1.
As the game continued the efforts never stopped and every 50-50 ground ball became Hingham’s. Key player Kylie McAloon says “Going into the game we knew just how good Concord-Carlisle was, but what continued to reassure us was our own potential. To pull out the win against the number one team in the state we had to work together, each fulfill our own role, and support each other no matter the moment, mistakes, or score.” McAloon lifted the spirits of her teammates and contributed to five points during the game.
The defense kept the team in the game creating lots of turnovers from defenders like sophomore Aria Giradino. She says, “Our team worked really well together to achieve a great win over a great team.”
It was a great win for the Harborwomen and it will be fun to see how far the team will go in the state tournament in a few weeks.
