On May 28th, the eighth graders from Hingham Middle School (HMS) embarked on “Move Up Day” at Hingham High School (HHS). Move Up Day is an annual school district tradition during which the eighth grade students and teachers from HMS take a short bus ride over to HHS to spend a portion of the day experiencing what school life will be like next year when they are freshmen. The goal of this event is to provide some familiarity to the eighth graders and help ease their transition from middle school to high school.
Move Up Day occurred on an HHS Day 2 during B and C Block and lasted for a little over two hours. Once the students and teachers arrived and got off of their buses, they made their way into the auditorium. In the auditorium, Dr. Buckey, Mrs. Piantes, and Mrs. Nosek, along with some HHS student volunteers, gave a warm welcome to the class of 2030 and a short presentation about the high school and its policies. After the presentation, the eighth grade was split into different groups for the next part of Move Up Day which included school-wide tours and visiting classrooms.
While half of the eighth grade went on tours led by student volunteers for the first part of Move Up Day, the other half used different classrooms around the school to play high school jeopardy with other student volunteers.
The student-led tours explored places like the LMC, the outdoor athletic facilities, the Pleasant Street Office, Nurse’s Office, and more. HHS sophomore and Move Up Day tour guide Gabby Sacco remarks, “It was great that the middle schoolers were able to get used to the high school now so that they can be more prepared on their first day of freshman year this fall.”
In the classrooms, the eighth graders played HHS Jeopardy in which they were broken into different teams to answer fun facts about HHS. Additionally, the kids got the opportunity to ask current high schoolers any questions that they had.
By the end of C Block, the eighth grade students and teachers made their way back to the main lobby, onto the buses, and back to HMS. HHS sophomore and Move Up Day tour guide Ayla Steele shares, “Participating in Move Up Day was a great experience and helping the incoming freshmen adjust to high school is really important.”
Thanks to Move Up Day, the incoming class of 2030 will hopefully be more prepared as they start their high school experience this fall.
