Hingham High School’s Student Council hosted their first assembly this Thursday, addressing many upcoming events at HHS. The assembly started off in a fun way when the audience was asked to look under their seats for a toy spider. Those who found the toys brought them up for a prize.

Student council president Emma Ranocha updated the student body on the success of Spirit Week and the ongoing fundraising for Nephcure, a charity for research on kidney disease. Following this was an update from the Green Team. First, the winner of the Slash the Trash competition was announced. The dance team won with no waste being incorrectly thrown out in all three lunches. A Ted Talk video was shown to highlight the benefits of recycling, and the damage that can be done from not recycling, which left everyone grateful for the dance team’s success. All were reminded that October’s Pack the Rack is coming to a close, and that the month of bike-riding had gone excellently. After an announcement about the new Hingham High Climate Committee, whose goal is to bring together and create bonding between the various sports and activities this year, the AFS invited the student body to their Halloween party this Monday.

With all the announcements done, the fun really began. To inspire people to dress up for Halloween on Monday, a costume fashion show and contest was held onstage. The costume competitors were two football players, a park ranger, Batman, a gorilla, and two hippies, but Natalie Gebhardt stole the show as undecided voter Ken Bone, which won the vote by a landslide. “The Ken Bone joke made my day”, says freshman Emma Sommers. The assembly was ended with a preview for the Student Councils lip sync fundraiser this Thursday. The crowd was roaring with laughter as they watched a parody of Summer Nights from Grease with the girls playing the T-birds and boys in wigs dancing around as the Pink Ladies.

The first assembly was a great time! “They did a really good job. It was entertaining and fun, especially the skit at the end. I can’t wait for the next one!”, says freshman Courtney Sherwood. Many people agree with that, and hope that the next one will go as well as this one did.
