As the year passes through November, playoffs are in full swing. Last week, the Field hockey team and boys’ soccer team stole the spotlight and put the entire school on notice.
Finishing the regular season 15-2-1, the field hockey team held high aspirations entering the playoffs. These expectations were met as they cruised to the round of 8. They made the short trip to Notre Dame Academy in Hingham and won a commanding 3-0 game against the second-best field hockey team in Hingham. This win propelled them to their second straight appearance in the Final 4 round.
Traveling to Dedham, the girls had one team standing in their way, the number two seed: Somerset Berkley. In a close game where Hingham brought it within one score, the girls ultimately lost 4-2. Though the game’s outcome did not show it, their success over the season cannot be overlooked.
Reflecting on the season, senior captain Becca Kardoos attributed their team’s success to “the determination and passion that the girls have for each other and the sport.” The talent-filled roster made themselves even more powerful through their strong “team chemistry.”
The combination of the talent and chemistry on the team not only earned them the title of Patriot League Champions, but it also brought them to the Final 4. Though ending earlier than they had hoped, the team’s future looks bright and the rest of the school is excited to see them come back stronger next season.
On the soccer field, the boys’ soccer team has been on a tear, leading them to the Final 4. Also ending the season 15-2-1, the boys knew they had potential. Junior Jack Monroe, a cornerstone on the defensive end of the pitch, was asked what he felt was the biggest factor in their deep playoff run. Jack felt that their “confidence is the most important part.” He attributed the team’s knowledge “that we deserve a good playoff run” as the root of their spirit.
This confidence showed in their wins against Nashoba and Milton, bringing them to host Minnechaug in a close game for a chance to move on. Going into the second period, neither team had scored. With the packed student section, wearing all red, and the 40-degree weather freezing the players, the score was bound to change.
In the 65th minute, Brayden Lawler gave Hingham their first goal of the day off of a riveting corner kick. Just 13 minutes later, a rattled Minnechaug goalie let up a goal from Adam Healey to seal the deal for the Harbormen, bringing the score to 2-0. Jacob Riker, the goalie for Hingham, stood his ground, not letting up a single goal. This win not only showed the amazing work the team has put in on the field but also the determination that they feature.
Looking ahead, the boys will travel 40 minutes to Walpole to take on Wakefield in an exciting Final 4 matchup. The game will be on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Students are expected to show their school spirit and cheer on their fellow colleagues as the boys’ soccer team makes a run for the State Title.
