On Tuesday, the Eagles continued their hot start to the season defeating the Boise State Broncos in a thrilling 63-61 game. The win moved the Eagles up to 7-1 with their only loss coming to a talented VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) team. Their fiery start has long-time fans wondering: Is this the year the Eagles punch a ticket into March Madness? Eagles fan Jeremy Lavoie (Junior) states, “I am ecstatic over the win against Boise State. The games are super easy to go to and really fun so I am really gunning for a spot in March this year.” Jeremy’s wishes rival that of most fans as the Eagles are looking for their first tournament appearance since 2009. With a star-studded roster, there is no telling how high the Eagles can fly.
The Eagle’s attack is led by Sophomore guard Donald Hand Jr. The former Virginia basketball player of the year is putting up 15 points a game and 8 rebounds for the Eagles. Chad Venning and Elijah Strong serve as a two-pronged attack on the wings for the Eagles, with both averaging more than ten points on highly efficient shooting.
The Eagle’s season last year was a step up from the prior year. Last year, they finished 20-16. The previous year, they had a losing record as they went 16-17. Last year, the dominant center, Quinten Post led the team in points (17 ppg), rebounds (8.1 bpg), and blocks (1.7). Last year, the Eagles were also off to a hot start, but as they got into ACC conference play, their losses stacked. Sadly, for them, Post moved on to the NBA, signing a two-way contract with the Golden State Warriors.
Looking forward to their schedule, they have an easier schedule than in past years. If they want to punch a ticket for March, then a few games they would need to win or put up a great fight are their UMiami game, Duke game, UNC game, and Notre Dame game. Even though these opponents pose a big threat to the Eagles, fan Ronan O’Brien stays hopeful as he said, “They look like they have a chance to win a game or two in March. We just need our bench to show out.”
