Whether you are driving through the shipyard, walking downtown, or last-minute shopping at Derby Street, it is clear that Hingham has holiday spirit. The streets are lined with houses glowing with festive cheer, but each has a unique style of decorating.
People have been using Christmas lights to illuminate their Decembers dating back to the 17th century. They were a way to brighten houses in the dark months of winter. This tradition still resonates with citizens today. Without decorations, a New England December would be dark and gloomy with the sun setting earlier and earlier every day. Holiday lights make Hingham feel warmer and give people hope that they can make it to break. All the decorations are great but which ones do Harbormen prefer?
White lights are an extremely popular way to show Holiday cheer. According to sophomore Teddy Lambert, “white lights are so much more aesthetically pleasing than multicolored lights and they go with everything.” A crisp white bulb can go great with any other decorations you might have. They create a welcoming atmosphere for all your guests around the holidays. Freshman Ava Halsing remarked,” white lights are classic and soothing. They give off a Christmas vibe because you can put them anywhere and they look great!” If you want a simple yet elegant look for your house, white holiday lights are a great option!
However, many people prefer multicolored holiday lights to brighten up their yard. No one can deny that multicolored lights are not only beautiful but bring a sense of comfort when you see them. Student Charlotte Gregory shares, “I like colored lights because they are nostalgic and fun and make me feel happy like a little kid.” The fun-loving look of these decorations can be enjoyed by all ages but brings many people back to the comfort of their childhood. Brightly colored lights can lighten up any room and instantly boost Holiday joy.
Ever since Thomas Edison created the lightbulb in 1882, they have been symbols of brightness and joy. Decorating with family or friends can be a great activity around the holidays and the product makes Hingham look amazing as a community. Freshman Aria Giardino expresses, “I love to decorate the tree with my family and help my dad set up the lights and wreaths outside.” No matter how you decorate or celebrate the holidays make sure you have fun!
