Excitement is an understatement when categorizing the emotions of Boston sports fans at the moment, as the recent success of the Bruins and Celtics have struck the televisions of Bostonian homes. Additionally, the Red Sox season began on Thursday night, which resulted in a dominating fashion in the Red Sox’ favor. This excitement was put into words by Hingham High School student Ellie Rogers, who said when asked about her hopes for the season, “I am very excited for the Red Sox season this year. I am expecting them to do very well and I’m excited to watch a bunch of games!”
Ellie’s expectations stem from the positive results of last season, as a young team led by veteran pitchers Garret Crochet and Aroldis Chapman surpassed all expectations and made the playoffs. The organization likely looks forward to this season with hopes of winning the American League East and getting past the first round. During the offseason, they successfully rehabbed young superstar Roman Anthony, and acquired more arms on their pitching staff.
On Thursday night, the Red Sox played their opening day game against the Cincinnati Reds in Cincinnati. They defeated the Reds in a dominant 3-0 victory, majorly led by the pitching staff. Garret Crochet was a highlight in the Red Sox pitching crew, throwing six scoreless innings and only allowing three hits during this time. Hingham High School student Beckett Williams was asked about the star pitcher, and replied with a simple but effective answer, saying, “I like Crochet.” This answer, although brief, perfectly describes the Red Sox fan’s opinion on the pitcher. Roman Anthony led the hitting staff, with three singles and a walk in five chances.
The Red Sox look to continue these efforts throughout the weekend and into early next week, before their own home opener against the San Diego Padres on Friday, April third. A loaded Padres team will be no small task for this young Red Sox crew, however their first win shows their capabilities. The Padres have had a slow start to the season, going 0-2 in their first two games against the Detroit Tigers. However this is deceiving, as the Tigers seem to be a juggernaut with ace Tarik Skubal on the mound. The home opener in 2026 marks the 114th opening game at the historic ballpark etching it into history as one of the oldest and most iconic parks in the major leagues.
