Midterm Election Update

Election season is the single most exciting time for any political buff, and although the
midterm elections is no presidential election, it still warrants immense attention. This season, more was at stake for both the Republicans and Democrats than has been for years. Going into the election, the Republicans had control of the House of Representatives, and the Democrats had control of the Senate. The Republicans needed to pick up six seats to take majority in the senate, a feat which would give conservatives majority control of the Senate.

After the votes were counted last Tuesday, America was informed that they, for the first time since the 2007, would have a Republican majority in the both houses of Congress. This 115th Congress, which will convene in January, will be composed of a new slate of congressmen and women who are sure to bring excitement and change to DC. The American public is eager to see how the Obama administration will work these newly elected politicians.

Here in Massachusetts, Rep. Charles “Charlie” Baker defeated Dem. Martha Coakley, former MA Attorney General, in a narrow race. Baker is the first Republican Massachusetts Governor since 2007, when Deval Patrick succeeded Mitt Romney. Coakley conceded at around 8 AM on Wednesday, after losing by just over 40,000 votes. In the senate race, Junior Senator and Democrat Ed Markey was up for reelection against Republican Brian Herr. Markey took the race with 62% of the vote, and nearly 500,000 votes.

The election season may be over for now until 2016, but this midterm election surely gave political enthusiasts their fix for the time being.
