At the conclusion of every college football season, one player is given the Heisman trophy for being the most outstanding player in college football. The award is often a large steppingstone to professional football. This year the race is as close as it’s ever been with three talented players leading the pack. On December 14th, the Heisman committee will announce who they have decided to be the 2024 Heisman trophy winner.
Ashton Jeanty: Running Back at Boise St
Ashton Jeanty is undisputedly the best running back in college football this season. He has led Boise St to a 9-1 record and a likely playoff spot for this season. Through the first ten games of the season, Jeanty recorded 26, five more than any other player. In their last win against San Jose St Jeanty broke the record for rushing yards in a season at Boise St. His elite ability to break tackles has quickly allowed him to rise through the Heisman ranks. Boise St lives and dies by the run game which has allowed Jeanty to lead college football in rushing attempts. He has yet to have a game this season where he did not reach at least 100 yards. With just a few games left Jeanty looks to continue his historic season.
Travis Hunter: Wide Receiver and Cornerback at Colorado
Hunter has exceeded all expectations that fans had of him coming into this season. He is the most versatile player in college football. Hingham High School senior Fin O’brien says that “Hunter is the most remarkable player I have ever seen. He does absolutely everything.” To the naked eye, Hunter’s receiver stats seem particularly good, but not Heisman worthy, but when you realize that he plays every snap on both sides of the ball his skill is one of a kind. Playing offense and defense at the college level is almost unheard of. Hunter is not just doing it on average, but he is doing it at a super elevated level. He has recorded 9 touchdowns this year for the Buffaloes along with 3 interceptions. His talent has led Colorado to first place in the Big 12.
Cam Ward: Quarterback at Miami
Cam Ward is having the best year of his college career as he is leading the Miami Hurricanes to Second place in the ACC. He began his career at Incarnate Word before transferring to Washington St university, and then finally to Miami. At Miami he has accumulated 32 passing touchdowns to go along with 3,494 yards. He leads college football in both statistics. Ward is best known for his composure in the pocket. He never seems to let the moment get the best of him. Hingham High School junior Charlie Shape believes that “His maturity on the field is what is leading to the Hurricanes winning week after week.” Ward has continued to place Miami on his back every game and his lead them to being ranked as high as 5.
