The college baseball season kicked off February 14th with northern teams traveling down south to play. Last season, Tennessee knocked off Texas A&M to win the Championship. This year, Tennessee starts off the season 7-0 holding the 3rd seed in division one. The South-Eastern Conference maintains the top four ranks in baseball currently with Texas A&M, LSU, Tennessee, and Arkansas. These four powerhouse teams have gained themselves early superiority over other teams in the first two weeks. Fan of Tennessee baseball, Beckett Williams who is also a freshman at Hingham High School states, “The Tennessee Volunteers are on a roll! Roll Vols!”
On the other hand, the Virginia Cavaliers have dropped their number two ranking after losing to Michigan, Oregon State, and Oklahoma. However, it is a long season, and there is no reason to panic for Virginia. They are still a premier team and should maintain aspirations to win the championship this year.
One of the best games of the year was already put on display when Alabama faced Ohio State in the Jacksonville Classic. After being down 10-0 they rallied on to win it 12-10. After relentlessly fighting to come back into the game, lefty first baseman Will Hodo, demolished a three run home run to walk it off.
Oregon State played number two Virginia in a top ten matchup. The Beavers picked up their first ranked win of the season by scoring seven unanswered runs on the Cavaliers while having 13 hits.
There are many other teams lighting it up this year including North Carolina, Georgia, Florida State, and Florida who also find themselves within the top ten. However, many of these rankings will be shaken up as future games unfold.
Fan of Vanderbilt baseball, Connor Downey who is also a premier athlete at Hingham high school states, “Their offense is on fire right now, winning their last seven games and jumping up the rankings with their slugging line up.” They have racked up 50 runs over their last four games and show no signs of slowing down. Currently they hold the 14 spot in the leagues rankings.
An upset alert struck the Aggies on February 25th. As the number one team they faced an unranked Texas State team. Austin Eaton gave Texas State the lead on a three run home run and they did not slow down after that, winning the game 7-3.
