Looking Ahead to 2016

Looking Ahead to 2016

Isabel Allen, Senior Staff Writer

Although the Presidential election of 2016 seems very far off, candidates looking to become the leader of the free world must start campaigning soon. Among the speculation for which Republicans will run are Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, and Chris Christie. The possibilities for Democrats may include Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, and Joe Biden. All are familiar names, but there are always a few lesser-known politicians who seem to rise to the spotlight quickly and gain national attention, as Obama did.

According to a poll recently released by Fox News, Romney leads the Republicans’ desired nomination with 19%, while Clinton leads the Democrats with 64%. Both have yet to announce that they will run for President, and some doubt that Romney will run at all. Most Democrats are sure that Clinton will announce that she is running, which would have potential for a major milestone in US history. If she runs and wins the election, she would be the first female president, and she and Bill Clinton would be the first couple to have each held the White House.

No matter who wins the election, he or she will have an immense set of national and international crises to deal with. The President will have to ensure continued growth in the US economy and employment rate in the US, but will also have to focus on issues outside our borders. The growing tension in countries including Pakistan, Iran, and North Korea will have to be addressed. In addition, our future President will likely seek to maintain a healthy relationship with China, in part to continue its progress towards being more environmentally friendly. There is a wide range of very important issues to focus on, so the citizens of the United States must look beyond the ads and rhetoric, and choose who will truly be a great candidate.
