On October 22, 2025, the 2025-26 NBA season was underway after the tipoff in a game between the New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now, nine days into the NBA season, teams are underperforming, players are shattering records, and numerous upsets have taken place.
As of right now, the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs stay undefeated in the West; meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers fight for the top spot in the East, both having undefeated 4-0 records. The Thunder, led by last year’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), Shai Gilgeous Alexander, show no sign of slowing down and continue to dominate game by game with their 6-0 record. Shortly behind them lie the San Antonio Spurs, led by former 2023 first overall draft pick Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama leads the league in rebounds per game, with 14.6, while also being first in blocks per game, with 4.8.
Moving on to the Eastern Conference, the Chicago Bulls continue their dominance, led by a starting five consisting of three all-stars. The well-rounded Bulls move the ball like no other team, creating limitless opportunities and even having six players averaging over 10 points per game. As for the 76ers, who are tied with the Bulls for first place in the East, point guard Tyrese Maxey has put on a clinic, leading the league in points ( 37.5 ppg), steals (4.5 spg), and fifth in assists, with 8.3 apg.
After interviewing some basketball enthusiasts at Hingham High School, I found some groundbreaking opinions. Senior Mac Corey commented, “I think Shai will win MVP again this year, he’s dominated the first few games.” I followed Mac’s comment by saying, “his efficiency has been low this season. Last season, the reason he got MVP was because of his high efficiency and his team’s dominance.” Mac replied by saying, “I agree, but his team shows no sign of slowing down and is 6-0. I think he will take them to the finals again, showing that he is the best in the league.”
In addition to Mac Corey, junior JT Reale provided commentary on the Boston Celtics. JT Reale said, “I believe Boston is still the best team in the league. They have had a slow start, but they will put it together like always.” I followed JT’s comment by noting that the Celtics superstar, Jayson Tatum, is out for the majority of the season. He may make a return later in the year, but he will not be at full health. This left JT speechless, and he could only reply with, “I was unaware of that. That changes my opinion. I do not think the Celtics can go far into the playoffs this year without their superstar.”
Overall, the beginning of the NBA season has brought many controversial thoughts, as well as some interesting games thus far. The conversation is clearly an interesting topic to many Hingham High School students. However, students seem not to be completely aware of all the factors that make a team great, nd affect their chance of winning. It will be interesting to see who continues to dominate the season, and those who climb up from the bottom!
